Des pays africains se sont engagés dans l’initiative COVAX (vaccin contre la Covid-19), pour garantir au moins 220 millions de doses de vaccin à leur continent, une fois qu’il aura été homologué et approuvé.
Selon le Dr Richard Mihigo, coordinateur de l’OMS pour la vaccination et les vaccins en Afrique, 54 pays du continent auraient exprimé leur intérêt pour l’initiative mondiale COVAX, d’après Africanews.
« Cela ne couvrira pas nécessairement tous les besoins du continent mais au moins 20 % de la population africaine. Le vaccin sera administré en priorité à ceux qui sont en première ligne, les travailleurs de la santé, puis aux groupes vulnérables tels que les personnes âgées ou celles souffrant d’une maladie préexistante », estime Richard Mihigo.
COVAX contribuera à la distribution équitable de 2 milliards de doses de vaccins approuvés. Déjà 8 pays africains adhèrent au programme, parmi lesquels, la Guinée équatoriale.
« Du point de vue de la Guinée équatoriale, je pense que la position du gouvernement a toujours été de déployer tous les efforts pour contenir la pandémie dans le pays les vaccins doivent être gratuits pour tous les citoyens », explique Mitoha Ondo’o Ayekaba, vice-ministre de la santé de la Guinée équatoriale.
Si en avril dernier, les propos de deux chercheurs français suggérant de tester un vaccin contre le Covid-19 en Afrique, le directeur de l’OMS, Tedros Ghebreyesus, a répliquant que l’Afrique ne sera un terrain d’essai pour aucun vaccin que ce soit.
